City manager Robert Horacek announced Tuesday that four city employees have received the highest awards offered by local government. John Rhoderick is the 2003 employee of the year; Police Chief Marty Vigil is the newest recipient of the George Brittain spirit award; Michael Speck is the firefighter of the year; Jason Fank is the 2003 Grants police officer of the year and Karen Cook received civilian of the year honors for Grants PD.

Rhoderick has worked for the city of Grants twice, from 1999 to 2000 and from 2002 to the present. He combines the duties of code enforcement officer and assistant city engineer, and works closely with city project coordinator Roberta Martinez on construction projects around the city. Horacek said Rhoderick's main projects this year have included watching over the construction of the new city water tank and expansions at the Grants/Milan Municipal Airport. "And he still handles code enforcement and planning and zoning meetings," Horacek added.
Chief Vigil, who was promoted into his job last December, was picked to receive the city's community spirit award. "Marty is a very conscientious police chief," Horacek said. "He has very big concerns with doing the job to the best of his ability, and his number one goal is to help the city be a great place to live."
Vigil joined Grants PD as an animal control officer and rose through the ranks to police chief in less than 15 years.
Officer Jason Fank is a long-time Grants police officer, and Cook is administrative assistant to Chief Vigil.
Firefighter Michael Speck has received special training on fighting fires in local wilderness areas, and has assisted in training Grants firefighters on how to handle wildfires.
Horacek praised all of this year's award recipients, and those who haven't been officially recognized. "There is lots of support from other city employees," he said. "They help them (the honorees) do a great job." - Marian Hamilton
