Twelve women from Grants participated and lost a combined total of 241.75 pounds/inches. The first-place winner for all participants was Marlene Chavez Toivanen of Grants with a loss of 34.6 pounds. She took home $600, while the first-place winners in Gallup and Aztec won $300 each. The total weight loss for Gallup was 177.01 pounds, and third place went to Aztec with 125 pounds lost.
“One of the incentives was a commitment by participants and Curves owners to work out at least three times a week,” Chavez explained. “If the member missed that goal, she was required to put $1 into the prize pot and if the owner fell short, she was expected to contribute $5. The pot was then divided into 50 percent for the first-place winner and 25 percent each to the runners-up.”
In addition to the prize money, Toivanen won a makeover, a massage, a pedicure, a hair styling, a tee-shirt, Mary Kay cosmetics and a photograph.
“Marlene told me she was going to spend the prize money on a new wardrobe,” Chavez said.
“Curves is designed to help women achieve their goals,” she explained. “After all, if Mom doesn't feel good, then nobody feels good.”
Chavez commented that Curves owners are always looking for new ways to push and motivate their members.
Curves is located at 1447 Roosevelt Ave. in Grants, telephone 285-3624.
