The fire was sparked near Sky Way Travel Center in the tamarisks, creating a plume of smoke which caused westbound highway traffic to stop for about an hour and one-half when spring winds drew the smoke eastward. The fire burned approximately four and one- half acres, according to Acoma Fire Chief Tony Boyd. Grants Fire Department, State Forestry, Southern Pueblos Agency and the Laguna Fire Department assisted the Pueblo of Acoma during the blaze. The fire was controlled a little after noontime and will be monitored for several days.The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
