St. Teresa students take to the links

Spring is here and the St. Teresa students can feel it. On April 6, the first through third grade students took a trip to the Coyote Del Malpais Municipal Golf Course where they were being instructed on the proper putting techniques. According to Zachary Goodrich, a third grader, "They are being taught how to respect the green, stay calm and keep their eyes on the ball." Natalie Rychener, one of the first graders who went, said that "they learned to listen to directions and how to become better golfers."

Everyone seemed to be having a great time. The third grade class told us that their goal is to hit a high and long drive with a hole in one. As the weather gets better, these classes will continue to go out to the golf course and practice putting. We asked one of our fifth grade golfers, Jvonne Gomez what she has learned so far and she told us that it is to be able to complete a pick-up hit. To her this would be very exciting. But her main goal is to continue to have fun.

There are also several sixth graders - Ethan Cooper, Jacob Gomez and Christopher Rodriguez - who have had the opportunity to get some training at the golf course. According to these golfers, they are learning the basics of golf and have even had a few lessons from Manny Martinez, the golf pro at the course. All in all, these students are enjoying a wonderful experience and getting some basics in at the same time. If there are any golfers out there that would enjoy helping out our little ones, please call the school.

This year at St. Teresa we have something we have never had before, a golf team. Joseph Trujillo is the sole member of the St. Teresa Golf Team. This past week he attended the Sandia Prep Invitational Golf Tournament and placed seventh in a field of 32 players. That's pretty awesome. He also attended an invitational golf meet at the Tanoan County Club Golf Course in Albuquerque and this is what he had to say about it: "I did okay, I hit the ball good, but I couldn't score. The greens were lightning fast and hard to score on. I shot a 98 which isn't very good, but I did hit the ball well" Congratulations to Joseph and good luck on his upcoming two-day tournament in Ruidoso.

And finally, last but not least is our track team which attended the Los Alamitos Invitational Track Meet on March 31 at the Grants High School track. Even though we are a very small school, we were able to place fourth for both the boy's and girl's teams. We won and placed in several individual events and we were able to come away with a first place in the girl's four by 200-meter relay. I think our athletes are doing a tremendous job. Keep it up.
