GRANTS - The Mount Taylor Ranger District of the U.S. Forest Service has posted a list of projects which have been approved within the boundaries of the TCP, an area of the mountain currently under temporary protection by the state Cultural Properties Review Committee.

One permit has authorized grazing on the American Ranch allotment, while another has allowed work on the Continental Divide Scenic Trail in the vicinity of Ojo de Los Indios.

A third permit has been issued for watershed, vegetation and grazing management in Gooseberry Canyon. This project involves the installation of rock and wire structures in the stream channel to repair flood damage and the installation of a temporary electric fence to exclude livestock from areas which have been reseeded with native plants.

The website also states that “Federal agencies have determined that mountains throughout the West are eligible for listing in the National Register due to their traditional cultural significance to Indian tribes.” Examples cited include Mount Graham in Coronado National Forest in Arizona, San Francisco Peaks in Coconino National Forest in Arizona, Medicine Lake Highlands in Shasta-Trinity National Forest in Montana and Spirit Mountain in Lake Mead National Recreation Area in Nevada.

“Moreover, federal agencies have determined that areas of traditional cultural significance to Indian tribes greater than 75,000 acres in size are also eligible for listing in the National Register,” the website states.

Examples of these areas include San Francisco Peaks in Coconino National Forest, Badger Two-Medicine in the Lewis and Clark National Forest in Montana. And the Zuni Salt Lake Sanctuary Zone, administered by the Socorro field office.
