“We hope to inspire the youth to take up fishing,” said Game and Fish officer Craig Sanchez. “This is another way kids can stay out of trouble.”
For fishers who are curious about what size of catch to expect: the catfish, grown out of state, are averaging two pounds but some have been known to be larger. The rainbow trout, from the Pecos Hatchery, are 9-12 inches in length.
The clinic will feature learning stations on responsible fishing as well as hands on fishing instruction. A free lunch and prizes will be given to the youngsters.
Any fisherman or woman can wet their lines in the morning. After that the regular pond rules apply.
Children under 11, people with a handicap status and adults over the age of 65 can fish at the pond anytime for free. However, anglers 12 and older need a license or can face serious penalties.
“Citations will be given out to anybody 12 and older that shouldn't be fishing there,” said Sanchez.
The penalties are $110 or a misdemeanor charge in court that holds a maximum sentence of six months jail time.
While not obeying the rules can be serious, nearly 100 anglers are expected to have fun on the free day.
Reports have shown catfish to bite on hotdogs, while trout have been biting on Powerbait, according to anglers at the pond recently.
