Possible governor candidate pays visit

GRANTS - Aspiring Republican candidate for governor Allen Weh held a meeting with local business leaders during a visit to Grants earlier this week.

He later characterized the meeting as productive with a discussion of the encumbrances on business playing a major role.

“One issue that arose was the narrowing property tax base caused by the purchase of property by neighboring Pueblos,” he said. “That removes property from the county tax rolls.”

He reported that the TCP was brought up, but he didn't feel that he knew enough about it to comment.

“Many of the meeting attendees remarked that the New Mexico economy is refocused on the Rio Grande Valley and neglecting communities like Grants, which have interstate highway access and a railroad running through the town,” Weh noted.

“I told them that I thought we needed to equalize our taxation structure with the five states surrounding us if we want to compete on a level playing field in attracting new business,” he added.

Weh is currently CEO of CSI Aviation Services, Inc., an international air charter and leasing company in Albuquerque. He established the business in 1979.

He is a past chairman of the Republican Party in New Mexico and has served on the Albuquerque Police Advisory Board, the board of the New Mexico Retail Association and the National Advisory Board at the Anderson School of Management at the University of New Mexico.

Wey is a colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve (ret.). He served two tours in Vietnam after enlisting in the Marines. He was recalled to active duty to serve in the Persian Gulf War and the expedition into Somalia. He was Chief of Staff of the Marine Forces in the Pacific and retired in 1997. He was recalled from the retired list in 2003 to serve in Iraq, where he helped to organize the new Iraqi army.

Wey holds both a B.S. and an M.A. from the University of New Mexico and is the father of three children and the grandfather of four.

He has been on a “listening tour” throughout the state to determine whether he will announce his candidacy. “I think we've traveled about 4,000 miles so far,” he said.
