Five beatings near downtown Grants
GRANTS POLICE SEEKING TIPS

Published Monday, June 22, 2009 4:47 PM MDT

GRANTS - According an official from the Grants Police Department, there have been five beatings within the last two weeks near downtown Grants. One person was beaten twice. The four persons beaten have been all Native Americans, making the attacks suspiciously appear as racial hate crimes.

A local businessman walked into the Beacon early last week with two injured Native Americans.

“This is a hate crime and the person that did this needs to be charged,” the man said as he was pointing to the two injured men. They were Jake Lewis and Larry Delgarito. Delgarito is the man who has been twice beaten. (See photo)

The latest beatings, two of them on June 17, left one-man beat so bad he was immediately flown to Albuquerque for extreme care.

“We thought we were going to lose him,” said Detective Sergeant John Castaneda.

In general, the four victims are homeless.

According to Castaneda, there are no suspects, “only a few tips.”

If you have any information that leads to the arrest of the person responsible, call Crimestoppers at 287-8400 or Castaneda at the Grants Police Department, 287-2984. A reward of $200 is being offered if the tip leads to an arrest.
