First annual bikers versus bulls

GRANTS - While many riders prefer a hog, some grew the courage at riding something they had no control over. With top prize at $200 and a buckle for show, six brave souls took to the Grants Rodeo Grounds, many for the first time.

When the dust settled, biker Israel Vigil was named the first year's competition winner. He stayed seated for 4.0 seconds aboard a Brahma bull. When bucked from his position, Vigil landed on his shoulder causing the collar bone to break.

He was unable to stay for the award ceremony but friend Bubba James accepted the award on his behalf.

Next year, the promoter of the event said he hopes to holds a bull riding class before the competition. With the coaching from former riders the level of rides hopes to be increased.

“We had a few professional riders giving tips before they got on the bulls,” said event coordinator Mark Sanchez. “But we can't eliminate all the bumps and bruises.”

The bulls used are for novice riders, also used in schools and other classes for teaching purposes. While danger can be an issue others feel it is something most bikers can handle.

“The bulls aren't anymore dangerous than their bikes,” said Grants Rodeo Association President Richard Jones. Jones said he was pleased at the turnout and hopes to draw a few more riders to next year's event.

“We'd like to see at least 15-20 more riders,” said Sanchez. “We will probably give a buckle for champ and more prize money.”

The entertainer and rodeo clown with 20 years in the business, Charlie Greene said the riders were never in any real danger. And after breaking many bones in his body, Greene knows what to look for to protect the riders.

“If there is a cowboy down, sometimes you just gotta jump in and then try to get out,” said Greene.

The crew at the grounds had a safe experience and expect the same for next year's event.

 “There is a lot of anticipation getting on an animal, then relief that you're out of the deal alive,” said Sanchez. “Our hats off to all of them.”

Sanchez and his company look forward to adding a big piece to next year's Fire and Ice Rally.
