As the officer asked the man if he was okay, the man slumped to the ground.
Police said they discovered two obvious self-inflicted bullet wounds to the chest, apparently from two derringers in the man's possession.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene and his name is being withheld until Michigan authorities can notify the family.
Officers said they discovered a clear, generalized suicide note in the vehicle.
Police officials do not think he had intentions of hurting anyone but himself.
State Police Lt. Eric Garcia said this is the first he had heard of a suicide in a state police parking lot. No clues were left as to why he chose the office.
