Marmon's family has been a part of Laguna for decades. His grandfather, Robert Marmon, came to Laguna from Ohio to run a trading post in the late 1800s. He became the first and only white governor of the pueblo, according to reports. Lee's father's name was Henry.
Marmon was the official photographer of the Bob Hope Classic Golf Tournament from 1968 to 1981. He is primarily known for his great images documenting pueblo life.
Marmon sold his collection of 65,000 negatives to the University of New Mexico Southwest Research Center. Marmon still carries a camera in his hand, clicking when he feels is necessary.
A book of his images is available in bookstores. It is called “The Pueblo Imagination: Landscape and Memory in the Photography of Lee Marmon.”
Marmon was the grand marshal of the ceremonial opening parade last night in Gallup and will be the grand marshal in the Aug. 15 ceremonial parade.
