Currently, the airport has barbed wire fencing surrounding it, not enough to keep some wildlife out.
“For three years now,” said Airport Manager Wes Hobbs, “in the early morning, there are nearly 40 female elk on the southeast side and some of them simply jump over the short fence.”
The funding will only be enough for new fencing ten feet tall on the south side of airport. “We've never had an incident with wildlife being hit by a plane and we don't want one. That is why we need the fencing,” said Hobbs.
“We have some pricey planes come through here, some residents don't realize that, and we don't want to risk them being damaged by wildlife.”
For example - Peabody Coal regularly uses a Challenger 300 valued at $20 million, according to Hobbs.
“We want to keep anything catastrophic from happening,” Hobbs concluded.
The remainder of the funds will be used to seal cracks in the taxiways and top the black top throughout with oil.
Martin Hicks made the motion to approve the resolution, Fred Rodarte seconded, and the resolution passed unanimously.
City Workshop cancelled
According to Grants City Clerk Denise Baca, the workshop for the regular meeting was cancelled on Aug. 19 because there were no items to discuss on the agenda. The regular council meeting is on Tuesday, Aug. 25 at 6 p.m. at City Hall.
