Running thanks

Dear Editor:

I want to publicly thank the following people and businesses in Grants for their help with our Walk/Run for Diabetes last Saturday, Aug. 22. Dick, Patty, Terrel and Joe with the City of Grants Recreation Department did a great job running the event; registration, course timing, age group places, and points that are awarded for every walk/run event. Our medical team of Pam and Mike who set up information tables, handed out literature, testing monitors, answered questions about diabetes, and help hand out flyers. Laura of Future Foundations Family Center for help with printing the flyers.  The following businesses for their donations of food, gift cards and certificates. Smith's Food and Drug, La Ventana Steak House, Dairy Queen of Milan, K&B Bread Co. of Gallup, Nabisco Baking Co., and Keebler Baking Co. The New Mexico chapter of the American Diabetes Association for T-shirts, hats, water bottles, arm bands and literature. The Future Family Foundation Center for use of building and parking lot. Of course, a big thanks to all who walked or ran our five kilometer course.  Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

John R. Hocker

Clean forests

Dear Editor:

I would like to thank Dion Sandoval and the people at Western Corrections Facilities.  I was discouraged when I had picked up ten garbage bags of trash near and around the end of the pavement on State Rd 547 or Forest Rd. 239.  Thinking it was a hopeless situation; I called Dion and asked for his help. Dion and the staff organized the inmates to help with the litter problem. He arranged for people from Western Correction to pick up the trash.  Between the end of the pavement and three miles up the Forest Rd 239, they picked up 30 bags of trash.  This trash was primarily in the zone of last year's pinion crop. Thank you, for helping to keep our mountain clean.

As a community member, please remember one of these sayings while you enjoy the National Forest: Toss no Mas, Give a Hoot Don't Pollute, Pack it in-Pack it out, Let's Pitch in, Leave No Trace, Pickup your trash and other people's trash. Let's enjoy a clean National Forest.

Sincerely,

Les Gaines
