School administration deals
with coach and principal student
STEVE STEWART APPROACHES SCHOOL BOARD

GRANTS - Grants High School Head Basketball Coach Marty Zeller was recently escorted out of the Los Alamitos Middle School basketball gym during a boy's basketball tryout session. According to a school official, Zeller was not welcome by the eighth grade boy's team coaches to the session. The coaches called the school principal Joan Gilmore that Zeller was at the gym during the tryout and Gilmore called Zeller and asked that he leave. Apparently Zeller refused, so Gilmore called the police to have him escorted out.

Steve Stewart, left, speaks to Grants/Cibola County School Superintendent Kilino Marquez, center, and school board member Dion Sandoval on Tuesday at the school board meeting at the Laguna-Acoma High School theatre.BEACON / JARAMILLO

Longtime businessman and Pirate fan Steve Stewart approached the school board on Nov. 3, about the incident.

“The is outrageous and uncalled for,” Stewart told the board at the Laguna-Acoma High School. “I have seen adults act in very petty and rude ways but, I've never seen anything that is any more outrageous and uncalled for than Ms. Gilmore's actions toward Marty Zeller.”

Stewart went on reading from a statement in defense of Zeller and requesting correction for Gilmore's actions.

“I am here to address you as members of the school board because it is your responsibility to hold the employees of the district accountable for behavior that is destructive to the purposes of public education. Refusing to allow the head basketball coach to attend tryouts at the mid-school is like saying that the principal at the mid-school can't go and see what is going on at the elementary schools.”

At the meeting, Superintendent Kilino Marquez told Stewart to rest assured, “we'll do what is best for all involved. We all want is best for the children.”

Marquez went on to say, “Coach Zeller and Ms. Gilmore are both very good employees, they simply have a difference in opinion.”

On Thursday, Marquez and members of the schools' employee union (CCFUSE) met to discuss the incident and he said that the meeting went very well. “We are going to try and get both persons at the same table and try to work the issue out. We are going to have disagreements,” the superintendent said, “What matters is how we work them out.”

Marquez said he is contacting Zeller on the future meeting and the union is contacting Gilmore.

Marquez noted that it is sad the incident went as far as Zeller being escorted out of the gym by police officers. “We could've resolved this early on,” he said. “Maybe this is one of the challenges we'll have now that we've gone to school athletic coordinators instead of one district-wide athletic director.

“We need some time and I believe we'll come to a good ending for those involved,” the superintendent said as the phone interview concluded.

According to several sources, the disagreement between Gilmore and Zeller may have started with the possibility of the coach's eighth grade daughter playing in the high school level in the coming winter basketball season. Zeller's daughter, Teige, is an outstanding basketball player and has shown signs of being a good addition to even a high school team. There is no NMAA or Grants/Cibola County School District policy that does not allow a mid-school student to play high school ball as long as the administrations agree.

Eighth grade basketball tryouts were held this week at Los Alamitos Middle School by head basketball Coach Walter Sarracino. Ultimately, the schools' administration left the decision of any mid-school student playing high school level to Sarracino, saying that they “trust his judgment.”

The mid-schools athletic coordinator, Patricia Barajas, said yesterday morning that 12 girls were chosen for the eighth grade girl's team and one manager. Three girls were cut. Teige was one of the 12 chosen, and therefore, will not play at high school level.

“Mr. Sarracino made the decision that none of the mid-school girls will be playing high school basketball despite several of them possibly having the skills,” Barajas said. “In the best interest of the program and the athletes, this is what Walter chose. He feels that the Buccaneers will have a great season this year.”

" What do you people NOT UNDERSTAND! Zeller was not at the practice for any helpful reason towards the program; Zeller was there interrupting practice harassing the coaches about the decision about his eight grade daughter not being able to play on the HIGHSCHOOL Team. Pull your HEADS OUT. Butch quit complaining about a subject that has nothing to do with this story; we all have realized that you were the Spanish teacher that got caned for a reason. "

" You mean to tell me that in a small community like Grants, we had to cut girls from the 8th grade team? We did not have enough money for 3 girls to continue their participation at the 8th grade level? I think that there should be a no "cut" policy for Jr High, unless you have more than 20 individuals trying out for the team. How poor our school district must be if we have to cut 3 girls from a JR. High Program, unthinkable, we could not find uniforms for them? Poor athletic program policy, this is a bigger point that Coach "Z" being at a Jr High practice. Focus is on the wrong thing here!! "

" Interesting story! From an outside view, is it not a Head Coaches responsibility to over see the JR High try outs? And make sure the JR High Program is going in the direction he, "The Head Coach", for boys program to do? I know in many areas this is a requirement for the Head Coach, not an option. So he was doing his required duty, was the principal? Why did she not call the A.D. first and ask that he not attend and explain her reasons? I am sure that I do not have all the facts from reading this story, yet surely in such a small community that this has to happen, and to such good people. It very interesting, and to those talking about kids drinking and such, stay with just the topic that is another forum for that. My and outside observer.(TX) "

Steve Stewart regardless of what he THINKS or what he was told should have absolutly no say. Congrats you name was metioned in the paper Steve! Regardless, for a man who is the sponsor for Fellowship of Christan Athletes I would think that he would act a little bit more like a Christan, and maybe think about what he is doing to his daughter in all of this. Gilmore though she may have faults did what was best for her staff and more importantly her students. Shame on you all for doing this to our youth! "

" Hi everybody, thank you all for your interest in this story. Generating this many comments can only mean genuine support for the youth in Cibola County. I have to stop and ask if Coach Zeller’s interest in the BOYS tryout was really for his daughter’s denial to the high school team. I don’t believe so. Coach Hooper, Pirate Football head coach, has been spotted at places like DYFL games and even talking to some of the coaches from LAMS. Is this to ensure his son’s playing time in the future? I don’t believe so. The real reason in my mind is to study the youth of today and make every attempt to procure the best from our athletes. If coach ‘Z’ was at the girls’ tryouts it may be different in my mind. But I have talked to the God-fearing coach and I believe his intentions are pure, otherwise we, as an unsupportive town, could just run off another 5-star quality coach. Not he could put his daughter, who I believe will go professional one day, in a private collegiate preparatory school. "

The community should be proud of the work that has been done at Los Alamitos and that Ms. Gilmore and her staff are not making decisions on who the person is but what is best for the students in there school. Also Walter Sarracino "kudos" to him for making the right choice and what he thought was best for the student and the team.
Shame on "Zeller" for trying to use his influence on people. Also if he would of left when asked to leave, the cops would of not been called "he is wrong". Admit when you take things to personal and we tend to do that with our own children.
Distinguish your professional life from your personal life.
Good Luck to his daughter she isthe one who is probably most embarrased by this. Ther is no doubt she is an excellent ball player. "

Coach Zeller was mad because his daughter did not receive special privileges and get to play on the High school team, which was a rule put in place for good reason. Children at the eight grade level may be physically but are not mentally at the high school level yet. That is why that is a RULE. Also when a mid school child moves up that means that a high school child lost there place on the High school team. I know many parents would not be happy if that happened to there child! SO CONCERNED CITIZEN LET THIS BE A LESSON TO YOU….DONT SPEAK IF YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU’RE EVEN TALKING ABOUT! "

" I am really dissapointed in the Beacon to run a story whithout doing research. It is common practice for newspapers to thourouly ivestigate both sides of a story before it is printed. There is much more to this story than what has been written. It is a well known fact among certain circles that Mr. Zeller thinks that because he is a High School coach he can push his weight around and try to get his way. It is obvious that he has put one of his cronies to do his dirty work in making sure that He slander Ms. Gilmore but Los Alamitos Middle School. It also saddens me that at a time when schools are doing all they can to meet AYP all we can focus is on a little game of basketball. Shame on you Cibola County Beacon for printing such innacuracies. And shame on Mr. Zeller for stooping so low "

" There is always 2 sides to every story. The middle school is working very hard to work with the high school. The two schools communicate with each other more than people think. Zeller can talk all he wants, but he was asked to not show up and still did for 2 days in a row and then refused to leave when asked, that is when the police were called. People need to stop complaining and find out the facts first. If you think that the high school is playing catch up with the students from Los Alamitos, think about what Los Alamitos is having to play - YES catch up also!!!! "

" This is the problem that arises when the focus of education is on sports rather than the education of the student. Sports are a great way for students to learn life skills, but should always be secondary to ensuring the student is receiving the knowledge they need for their grade level.

Aside from that, in the interest of fairness, it is my personal opinion that the student should play on the team for their grade level, regardless of their skill level. By moving them up to the high school level in this case, you may benefit the high school team, but you take away much more from the students at the appropriate grade level who could learn from the better player. " This incident brings to light a long standing problem with Ms. Gilmore, she is not willing to acknowledge that the mid school is a feeder to the high school, and therefore, high school staff should have input into the mid school programs. It is time for our school board to clean house at Los Alamitos and find an administrator that is willing to work with the high school to help mid school students be prepared for all aspects of the programs, academics, athletics, and other activities at Grants High School. The staff at Grants HS spends way too much time during the freshman year trying to help students catch up. "
