News 13 reports Ulibarri plays hooky
ABSENT FOR SPECIAL
SESSION VOTES

CIBOLA COUNTY - Michael Herzenberg, a reporter from KRQE News 13, reported on Nov. 11 that as lawmakers last month worked to solve the state's budget crisis in a special legislative session, two state senators skipped much of the work to go on separate hunting trips. One was Senator David Ulibarri, D-Dist. 69, which includes Cibola County. The other was Sen. Phil Griego of San Jose.

The session was extremely important, according to senators on both sides of the aisle. It was so important that Sen. Carlos Cisneros, D-Questa, missed his brother's funeral to be there.

Sen. Ulibarri, meanwhile, left the session after just three days, instead going hunting elk in the Four Corners area.

According to Herzenberg, Ulibarri refused News 13's requests for comment, so the reporter found him at a Veterans Day ceremony in Truth or Consequences.

"You know, we wasted so much time the first four days," Ulibarri said.

Later, when Herzenberg asked about whether he felt he was protecting his constituents' interests, Ulibarri said, "I think all the interests that I represent were protected."

Ulibarri missed every vote on budget cuts. Food for the elderly, education and Medicaid took a hit statewide.

Even Bluewater Lake State Park in Ulibarri's own district is shut down for now and the Department of Corrections said it may have to close the women's prison in Grants. That could mean 150 jobs gone and hundreds of inmates freed. However, Governor Bill Richardson assured this week a delegation from Grants, including Clemente Sanchez who ran against Ulibarri and ultimately lost a very close race late last year, that the women's prison will not close.

During the interview with Herzenbery, Ulibarri said he didn't feel his absence was a story.

"I think this is a story that is worthy, these veterans that are here," he said.

But, when Herzenberg said the state's Department of Veterans Services was one of the departments cut during the session, Ulibarri said, "I think that is one of those that will be vetoed."

Also absent for part of the session was Sen. Phil Griego, D-San Jose, who spent the first three days of the session hunting elk.

He told News 13 he had finally won the lottery for an elk-hunting license and didn't want to miss the chance. He returned to the Roundhouse in time for all of the budget votes.

Dick Knipfing, anchorman for the station, said as he opened the investigation piece on Wednesday evening, “Lawmakers dropped everything they had and headed to Santa Fe to handle the state's money mess . . . well, not all lawmakers - two went hunting.”

Calls to Ullibarri's cell phone and residence went unanswered.

" Shame on you Cibola County Beacon, you were very misleading and lazy not doing research, I just caught Senator Ulibarri on the local radio station, if it was excuse on the floor of the senate and none of his peer apposed there was no story. If you can not be biased and print trash I hope more citizens in the community will boycott your negative format. It gives all of Cibola County a black eye whether you realize it or not. SHAME SHAME SHAME! "

" Now here's a man that needs to be unelected! Don't blame the Cibola County voters for putting him in office because we didn't. Too many people here know his shady, slimy ways. It was the uninformed voters in Socorro who elected him, check the voting results.

I plan to spend a lot of time campaigning in Socorro for his rival during the next campaign. Time to send Ulibarri home. "

" Not surprised at all at Mr. Ulibarri's selfish choice not to be there. It was a "waste of time" for people that voted for him. I didn't vote for him because he isn't concerned about our county (Cibola County), never was. Senator Cisneros had more of a valid reason why he shouldn't have been there but he represented his district anyway. "

" This should not surprise the people of Grants the man is a coyote and takes care of only what is of concern or will benefit him. Someone needs to look into getting this man impeached if possible. He cheated to get into that position and now could care less what or who is being affected by his actions. He states that four days were a waste of time well he needs to get out if his constituents are a waste of time. "

" Why does this suprise anyone? This elected official did not try to address the prison reduction which would have cost jobs. Elected official or serving his own special interest? Does his brother still work at CCA? Do some research and see where his campaign funding came from. Wake up Grants/Cibola County. "

" As far as I am concerned, this is a fire-able offense. Let's hope the voters remember this the next election and aren't sated, or is that sedated, by some 'political schmooze' between now and the next election.

His reputation is already suspect after instances surrounding the last election's results, among other things and this should be the last straw as far as the residents of the district are concerned.

I haven't even seen or heard a public apology and how did Ulibarri get marked present anyway? An apology should have been forthcoming the next day at the latest. Is he even sorry?

Not that it is a defense but the other representative was at least there to vote. This is one of those times the voters can actually read between the lines and see an elected official's true colors. Now let's not forget! "

" Regardless of where Ulibarri is from the fact of the matter is he missed what will more than likely be the most important votes of his senate career. It is a shame that only two of the many state Senators missed the most important meet of the year, and a disgrace that he is representing our county.

Please post this in the Dear Editor section as well "

Also, if you are going to say Sen Ulibarri is from Cibola County, then you should follow through and say Sen Griego is from whatever County, not where is receives his mail. Same for Cisneros. Accuracy should be ultimate in news reporting "
