GRANTS – Georgie and Lorenzo Chavez, of Cubero, have been identified as the victims of last week’s shooting at 805 Santa Marina St., according to reliable sources who wish to remain anonymous.
On Jan. 30, Grants Police Department officers were dispatched to a Grants’ home to respond to a situation in which two people had reportedly been shot.
When police arrived, they found Georgie Chavez, 20, and Lorenzo Chavez, 19, with gun shot wounds. Georgie was shot in the chest.
Cibola General Hospital staff cared for Lorenzo the night of the shooting and he was later released.
Georgie remained in an Albuquerque hospital as of Sunday, according to officials.
Sources said Lorenzo and Roel Martinez of San Rafael were involved in an altercation at a home in the Mount Taylor Addition earlier in the day of the shooting and their issues with each other continued at the house party on Santa Marina Street.
According to sources, Lorenzo and Martinez again had an altercation inside the Santa Marina home. Words of violence were said as the two were separated and moments later shots were fired at the home while Georgie and Lorenzo were near the front doorway.
It is unknown when the partygoers fled the scene.
However, when police arrived, only a few people remained at the home, the two Chavez males and the female who had called for help.
Approximately 12 to 15 people were at the house party, according to GPD Detective Sgt. John Castaneda.
It was estimated that 12-16 shots were fired at the home, according to sources.
Also unknown is whether the shooter was on foot or in a vehicle and what kind of weapon was used.
“We’ve made three interviews and are following some leads. However, we need more information,” said Castaneda late last week.
Police are seeking help in identifying the shooter or shooters.
